Back in the 1800's the Africans used to participate in this very popular contest called The South African Longboard Surfing Association. The sport of Longboarding as we know it today is in fact exactly how the sport of surfing began as far back as the late 1800's. The sport became popular in the late 50's and as the sport evolved the surfboards became shorter and more maneuverable. By the mid 70's surfing had reached its maturity as an international sport and along with it came the branding of surf gear and sponsorship of major events such as the Smirnoff Pro Am and many more. It was around this time that South African Shaun Thompson won the world title and South Africa saw its own international event in the Gunston 500.
